(COLDWATER) – A Coldwater man has been convicted on multiple criminal sexual conduct charges from nine years ago.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says on Wednesday, a Branch County Circuit Court jury found 55 year old Alex New guilty on two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.
New was charged in 2016 by the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office, but he left the area and was able to evade authorities, until he was found in Florida. He was brought back to Coldwater in June 2024 by Operation Survivor Justice, which is a partnership between local county prosecutors, the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the U.S. Marshals Service designed to locate, apprehend and return Michigan fugitive offenders that have outstanding sexual assault warrants.
Court officials say the victim testified at the trial about what happened in 2009 and 2010 when New lived in the home she was staying at. Her mother also testified that she didn’t now about the assaults until 2015, when New moved back after spending 11 months in jail for molesting two other girls.
The Michigan State Police Michigan Sex Offender Registry shows that New was convicted in August 2014 on fourth degree criminal sexual conduct. He plead no contest and had several other charges dismissed. Then in October 2014, he was sentenced to 11 months in jail and five years probation, along with being ordered to register as a sex offender.
New is scheduled to be sentenced August 11.
