STURGIS – A public hearing has been scheduled to discuss the Fiscal Year 2022 budget for the City of Sturgis.
During their meeting Wednesday night, the Sturgis City Commission voted unanimously to hold the public hearing during their August 11 meeting. City Manager Mike Hughes says the budget does include some rate increases for the coming year. There are no increases proposed for the electric
rates. For the water fund there is a 6.9 percent increase over three years. The wastewater fund is calling for a 5 percent increase over three years. There would be no increase in year one, then increases of 2.5 percent in year two and year three.
City Controller Holly Keyser shared that with the Sturges-Young Center for the Arts no longer offering food service and working with caterers to provide meals for different events, she refigured their portion of the budget. Hughes shared that because of the General Property Tax Act, the City must hold a public hearing on the budget before it is adopted. The City Charter requires the budget must be adopted before August 20.
