BRUSHY PRAIRIE, IN - Area high school baseball was one of many sports cancelled in the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, but in Panther Country Thursday night it was a “field of dreams” for players at Kellett Field for a panther verses panther scrimmage.
Seth Troyer and Tyler Curtis drafted two 10-man teams consisting of players from the 2021 Prairie Heights Baseball Program. Due to time constraints, only four innings were played with each inning having a different situation to start; occasionally with runners on to set up a competitive atmosphere. Team Troyer jumped out to an early lead but Team Curtis fought back to tie things up at 3 late in the game. Team Troyer took advantage with some aggressive baserunning by Jacob Graber and finished the game winning 5-3. Seth Troyer through 4 innings with great command on the mound and Tyler Curtis pitched 3+ innings with relief from Hunter Allen late.
Panther Head Coach TJ Guthrie said “It meant a great deal to these players to be able to get out on a ball diamond to compete one time before summer ended. It's been over 12 months since a game has been played on Kellett Field and although there were no jerseys, no fans, and no scoreboard, you could tell these players were itching for an opportunity to play baseball in a game setting”.
Philip Sheets and Chace Curtis showcased tremendous catching ability all night long. Kamden Leedy and Seth Troyer sparked the offense early with big hits.
Dakota Butler tagged up from 3rd base to score on a deep fly ball from Rickie Bailer forcing a bang-bang play at the plate on a great throw from Luke Severe.
Due to IHSAA guidelines spectators were not allowed to watch in person; however, over 150 views watched a live stream via Facebook.
