(UNION CITY) – Voters in the Union City School District said Yes to a bond proposal.
On Tuesday, Branch County voters approved the proposal 422 to 269, while voters in Calhoun County passed the proposal 162 to 154.
Union City Schools was asking for a 0.84 mill increase, which will generate $18.9 million through the 30 year bond. Coupled with a $23.6 million grant from the State of Michigan, major facility improvements will be done.
Union City Superintendent Chris Katz says the plan will be to consolidate the District from three buildings down to two, creating a more efficient layout, while improving safety, infrastructure and learning spaces. Middle School students will move to a new wing on the newly renovated High School campus. They will have their own entrance, classrooms and learning spaces plus access to a new shared media center, art and band rooms and cafeteria.
Katz says at the Elementary level they will add a Kindergarten classroom and address some important safety and infrastructure needs.
