ANGOLA - The safest place in Steuben County was arguably the Angola Meijer last night.
Cops for Kids Steuben County took 150 local elementary school aged kids on a $400 shopping trip with 'a cop' at Angola's Meijer located off N. Wayne St.
Indiana State Troopers, Indiana Conservation Officers, Steuben County Sheriffs and police officers and firefighters from Angola, Fremont, Orland, Hamilton, Ashley-Hudson and Metz along with roughly 40 teachers took each of the kids on individual shopping trips.
They were allowed to spend only $40 on toys and the remaining $360 was to be spent on necessities explained Angola City Police Detective Mike Wood.
Cops for Kids Steuben County raised over $82,000 in November during the WLKI Pie Auction.
Before the shopping trip, the elementary students and their families had dinner with the emergency personnel at The Life Changing Church.
Meijer employees along with the assistance of Detective Wood completed a flawless evening for the cops, the kids and their families.
Officers and teachers could be spotted throughout the store pushing carts filled with blankets, coats, shoes and an occasional Squishmallow.
Santa and Mrs. Claus were also spotted wondering the aisles of Meijer along with The Grinch, who was on his best behavior, likely because of the police presence.
Local high school students from Forever Improving Steuben Together FIST were setup across from the registers with a gift wrapping station incase parents wanted someone of the items saved for Christmas.
