COLON, MI – A home was destroyed early Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into it and caught fire.
The Colon Fire Department was dispatched at 12:38 a.m. to a report of a single vehicle crash which took place in the area of Burr Oak and East Palmer Lake Roads near Colon.
The initial call came from the vehicle’s On-star alert system where dispatchers were told an occupant was trapped and the vehicle was possibly on fire.
Soon after, a bystander at the scene later told 911 operators that the vehicle had crashed into a home and detached garage and caught fire, spreading fire quickly to throughout the home.
First emergency units on the scene found the home was fully involved in flames. The driver had reportedly escaped from the vehicle.
The roof quickly collapsed from structural damage from the impact.
The home was unoccupied at the time and was declared a total loss.
Assisting the Colon Fire Department at the scene were departments from Bronson, Burr Oak, and Tri-Township. Also providing assistance at the scene was the Colon Police, Bower’s Service and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
