ANGOLA, IN — And Angola Manas facing felony charges after allegedly punching officers following a weekend incident.
The Indiana State Police initiated a traffic stop in the area of County Road 275 North near County Road 85 West late Late Saturday night at around 11:30 p.m. An ISP trooper then requested a Steuben County Sheriff Department K9 unit to search the vehicle based on a reasonable suspicion of narcotics being inside.
On arrival of the K9 unit, authorities the requested the driver, identified as Aaron J. Sylvia, age 40, of Angola, to exit the vehicle for further investigation. Sylvia allegedly resisted getting out of the vehicle, becoming extremely combative and resistant.
Authorities say Sylvia allegedly struck both a state trooper and a corporal with multiple punches and kicks. The corporal says they used a stun gun on Sylvia, but was not effective. Several more law enforcement officials arrived on scene to restrain Sylvia.
Sylvia was transported to the Steuben County Jail after being cleared through medical evaluation at an area hospital. He is facing several charges following the incident. Sylvia was was booked on five charges including two felonies for battery on a Public Safety Official. He was also booked on misdemeanors for Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Paraphernalia.
At least three lawn enforcement officers were injured. They were medically evaluated and released without the need for further medical attention.
Several troopers from the Indiana State Police Post in Fort Wayne, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Angola Police, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Countryside Towing Service all assisted at the scene.
