(LANSING) – The Village of Quincy and the City of Watervliet are among 28 Michigan communities receiving funds to do updates to their drinking water systems.
On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer awarded more than $14 million in grants, under the umbrella of the MI Clean Water plan to 28 Michigan cities, villages and townships to better ensure safe and clean tap water for their residents.
Quincy is receiving $240,100 while Watervliet is going to get $113,540 in Drinking Water Asset Management grants. These grants are available to assist water supplies in asset management plan development or updates; and/or distribution system materials inventory as defined in Michigan's Lead And Copper Rule.
Whitmer says by making critical investments in our water infrastructure, thousands of good paying jobs can be created and access to safe drinking water can be protected. That will drive down costs for families and communities. Whitmer says the MI Clean Water plan is a game-changer for Michigan and the State should continue building on it to replace all lead service lines statewide, tackle toxic contaminants, and lower utility bills for families.
The grants are issued through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The money is used to support work including replacing lead service lines, enhancing water affordability plans, and connecting homes with contaminated drinking water wells to safe community water supplies.
